Homework

There has been a slight change

Dear Parents,

Year Six would like to welcome a small shift in focus with homework. Our attention will be placed more on increasing the children’s independent reading skills and abilities. As of this week, reading will need to be logged each day. Your child’s reading log needs to be signed by parents each night. (The reading log can be found under the homework heading on the Blog) The students are required to read for at least 10 - 15 minutes each night for 5 nights. Students MUST be reading a chapter book which suits their reading level. We ask that your child reads to you at least 2 times a week and that you ask them questions about their book.  Questioning your child about their book will highlight whether they comprehend what they are reading. The students have also been encouraged to read to their siblings (in the case that they have one/some). The aim of this intense reading homework is to work on:

  • ·        Increasing their vocabulary.
  • ·        Utilise expression, and
  • ·         Ensure fluency.
If you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to contact your teacher.

The following does still apply:

Spelling
Students are given a list of spelling words for the week. They are expected to draw four columns in their book, labelled Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The students are to use the look, cover, say, write and check strategy to learn and memorise their spelling words. Parents are encouraged to test their children at home.

Mathematics
Students will be given a focus times-table for the week. Students are expected to write each times table out each night of the week (Monday – Thursday), similarly to their spelling words.

The students will also have drill questions. These questions will reflect the content of the mathematics topics being covered in class during the week.

Homework is expected to be completed neatly and on time. Homework will be handed out on a Monday and it is to be handed in on the following Monday.
